The Institute for the Future's Open City/Art City Festival

Scenes From Firearm Safety Monitors, 0–160 Decibels, the result of an MDP/Lab Project taught by Tim Durfee called "sensored stories," was selected by curators Betti-Sue Hertz and the Institute for the Future to be part of the Open City/Art City Festival on October 4, 2014, at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco.

The installation, by MDP/Lab students Gerardo Guerrero, Marcus Guttenplan, Zoe Padgett, and Jenny Rodenhouse, imagined a future in which cities around the world have installed gunshot detection sensors to automatically alert law enforcement in the event of a shooting. This new infrastructural "sense" has been established to listen for occurrences of violence—but questions remain as to how it could be misused, misinterpreted, or appropriated.
